In this guide, we will be using the term ‘merchant’ to refer to creators who use affiliates to sell their products.

1. Overview

Who are affiliates?

Affiliate marketers sell products on behalf of merchants in exchange for a commission. The same way a baked goods seller keeps some packs of snacks at a supermarket and receives money made from sales, while giving a percentage back to the store owner, is the same way affiliates sell on behalf of creators in exchange for a commission. In a sense, affiliates are retailers. Except they operate mostly digitally and do not hold physical inventory.

Thanks to the internet, affiliate marketing has gotten very popular in recent years. In 2024, the number of affiliates on Selar grew to over 1,000,000 Affiliates, from 107,000 the previous year. This shows that more people are recognizing the value of affiliate marketing and are choosing to explore it!

Why should you use affiliates on Selar?

As a digital creator or merchant, there are several benefits to using affiliates on Selar:

Who can be an affiliate?

Anyone can be an affiliate as long as they desire to sell. However, people who are typically successful affiliate marketers tend to fall into one of the following categories:

  1. Influencers
  2. Loyal customers
  3. Content creators
  4. Marketers

Pro tip: Pick affiliates that naturally fit the products you are trying to sell. For example, a fitness influencer will probably make a better affiliate for an ebook sharing weight loss tips, compared to a fashion or beauty content creator. While it doesn’t hurt to gather many eggs in your basket, you can save energy and reach your goals faster by getting affiliates who are a great fit to the products you want to sell.

2. How to access and use affiliates on Selar

Now that you know who affiliates are, and the benefits of affiliate marketing, let’s look at the Selar platform and how to access or use affiliates on Selar. As a merchant, there are two key ways to get access to affiliates on the Selar platform:

  1. List your products to the affiliate marketplace directly.
  2. Add affiliates to your store.

Let’s explore both options.

Listing products on the affiliate marketplace

Selar has an affiliate marketplace that is home to many affiliates and merchants. Here, merchants can list their products for affiliates to discover, and affiliates can choose what products they want to sell, in exchange for a commission.

The Selar affiliate marketplace.

Before you can list a product on the affiliate marketplace, however, there are certain requirements one must meet.

Product requirements for Selar’s affiliate marketplace include:

  1. Have really clear product images: Ensure that your product is of high quality and has images that show its features clearly.
  2. Write clear product descriptions: Provide detailed descriptions of what is being sold. Affiliates would appreciate products with dedicated sales pages that explain the benefits and value of products. This would help them sell better.
  3. Follow the pricing guidelines: At the affiliate marketplace, the price of your product should be at least ₦3,000. This is to ensure affiliates make some decent cash. There are some exceptions to this rule. For instance, if specific merchants have high sales volume, lower-priced products may be allowed.
  4. Pay attention to store links and social media channels: Include a well-written store description and provide links to your social media channels to enhance credibility and customer trust. This will make the job of the affiliate way easier, too!
  5. Set a commission for affiliates: You can set a fixed commission for all your products, or create different commission rates for different products.
  6. Set fair commissions for products: Typically, high-ticket products priced at ₦50,000 and above should have a minimum commission of 20%. For all other products, the commission should be at least 30%.
  7. Have a support channel: Provide a dedicated support channel to help resolve any issues related to your product(s) that affiliates might have. This is a good way to encourage more sales.

As a merchant, you have access to the affiliate network on all Selar plans (free, pro, and turbo) as long as you follow the criteria above. The free plan limits your access to only 40 affiliates while the paid plan gives you access without limits. You also cannot give affiliates access to sales pages on a free plan because having a sales page is a feature exclusive to pro and turbo subscribers.

Once you meet the requirements, now it’s time to list your products on the Affiliate marketplace. To do so, follow the following steps:

1. Go to “All Products” on your dashboard.

2. Select a product and click the three vertical dots on the side. It will reveal a list of options.

3. Click Publish to the Affiliate network.

4. Ensure the product meets all the guidelines stated above.

5. Set a percentage of commission you will be willing to give for the product.

6. Publish it in the Selar affiliate network. This way, affiliates in the marketplace will be able to see it while browsing on the Selar Affiliate marketplace and can choose to sell it if they like your offer.

Adding affiliates by yourself to the affiliate marketplace

As a merchant, you also have the option of adding affiliates by yourself, to a product. The affiliate will however only be able to promote the products from their store and will not have access to the entire affiliate marketplace.

The added affiliates do not come at an extra charge for either party, however, for affiliates to join the affiliate network and gain access to the marketplace, they will have to pay a yearly fee of N3,000 (three thousand naira).

To add affiliates to your product, take the following steps:

Step 1: Log into your Selar account, go to your dashboard, and navigate to the Affiliate Settings.

Step 2: Click on the Add an affiliate button.

Step 3: Include the email address of the affiliate you want to add, and give them a commission of earnings for a specific product.

Step 4: Select Add affiliate, and you’re all set!

Step 5: You can now invite the affiliate to sell the product, once the link has successfully been generated. With this link, they can share it with people looking to purchase the product, and when they use the link, a percentage of the commission will be given to them.

Now that you know how to add affiliates to your Selar account, let’s look at some best practices for using affiliates.
