Selar Joins Jobtech Alliance Accelerator Program, Winning $50,000 Grant to Empower African Creators and Drive Economic Growth
Selar, Africa’s leading e-commerce platform for creators to sell digital products, proudly announces its acceptance into the esteemed Jobtech Alliance Accelerator Program. This significant milestone marks a new chapter in Selar’s mission to empower creators across the continent and drive employment and economic growth.
The Jobtech Alliance Accelerator Program, steered by Mercy Corps and BFA Global, recently announced its latest cohort consisting of eight startups dedicated to connecting Africans with quality and decent job opportunities. As Africa faces significant challenges such as high unemployment, and ongoing barriers to economic inclusion, Jobtech Alliance is catalyzing a transformation in the future of work. By cultivating an ecosystem of innovative digital platforms, Jobtech Alliance supports organizations that empower and provide job opportunities and support economic development in Africa.Â
Selar stands out in this cohort due to its uniqueness in creating jobs and building livelihoods for Africans. The platform enables creators to sell digital products, with a good number of creators earning an average of $200 per month—an amount well above Nigeria’s minimum wage. Additionally, many creators on Selar employ teams of 3-5 people, further expanding the platform’s impact on employment. With over 250,000 creators and 20,000 affiliates, Selar supports a vibrant community of individuals making a livelihood through affiliate marketing and digital sales.
Selar officially joined the Jobtech Alliance Accelerator Program on April 25th, 2024, winning a $50,000 grant that will empower the company to intensify its efforts in growing the creator economy in Africa while helping African youths have a source of income through digital sales and affiliate marketing. Selar will also receive bespoke, targeted venture-building support from the Jobtech team of global experts
Selar’s primary goal is to grow the creator economy in Africa. By providing essential tools that enable creators to earn a living, Selar is a powerful enabler of employment across the continent. The decision to apply for the Jobtech Alliance Accelerator Program was driven by a commitment to further enhance these tools and create new initiatives to support creators and affiliates.
“Last year we published a report on creators creating jobs in Africa, not just for themselves but for others too, so alignment with Jobtech Alliance’s mission which is creating more jobs couldn’t be more perfect! With over 1M registered users on Selar today, we’re fully in growth mode and the accelerator and funds will help us drive growth even further” CEO Selar, Douglas Kendyson mentioned.
“We are delighted to welcome Selar into the Jobtech Alliance Portfolio. Selar closely matches our new investment thesis, building a unique, innovative suite of products that solve the real and unique problems that African Creators face and we are delighted to be able to offer our support as they go from strength to strength” – Michelle Hassan, Jobtech Co-Director
Through the grant, Selar aims to expand its product offerings to the Kenyan market, one of its largest in East Africa. This expansion will provide more Africans, particularly Kenyans, with opportunities to earn extra income. Additionally, Selar plans to develop exciting new products during the accelerator program, with details to be announced in due time.
